Onset VFW bops with the blues

Nov 5, 2023

The Willie J. Laws Band brought its own brand of blues to the Dudley L. Brown VFW Post 2846 in Onset on Saturday, Nov. 4.

"Whether you know it or not, we are one of the hottest bands in New England," said Laws. He added the band has a Grammy nominated album and another album in the charts, but it performs locally because it lives locally.

"You never know who your neighbors are," Laws said.

At times, the band brought attendees out onto the dance floor with its music. At other times, Laws himself left the stage to mingle, sing and tell stories directly with the crowd.

One audience member, called Winna, said she was a fan of the band, and had previously seen them at the Onset Blues Festival.

She came out to see them again largely to support the VFW, she said.

Ben Baptiste, commander of the Onset VFW, said the organization was trying with events like these to bring variety to the town and to bring people out into the community.

The funds raised from the event help support the VFW's good work in the community, Baptiste said.

The band had Willie J. Laws Jr. on vocals and the guitar, Bruce Mattson on the keys, Osi Brathwaite on the drums and Lenny Bradford on the bass. The band's new album, "Too Much Blues," is available at williejlawsband.com/music.
