Letter to the editor: Thank you to a police officer

To the editor:
Have you ever had one of those horrible days when it seems like you shouldn’t have gotten out of bed? On Tuesday, Oct. 6, I had one of those days. I woke up late and after that, everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Frustrated and tired, around 5 p.m., I stopped at an ATM in West Wareham then drove to a nearby store for one last item. At the cash register, I couldn’t find my wallet. I retraced my steps in the store, twice. I went to the parking lot and checked my car. I drove back to my bank and looked inside and out. It was nowhere to be found. I began to panic.
I was near the Wareham Police Department, so I stopped to report it. With faith in the goodness of people, I thought someone may have found it and turned it in. The officer I spoke with was professional and caring. He patiently listened to my story. He asked politely if he could re-check my car. Calm and focused, within just a few seconds, he found my wallet. I’m not sure whose smile was bigger – his or mine. I sensed the presence of God in that moment.
I thanked the officer, but in all the excitement, I failed to get his name. I want him to know how grateful I am. His kindness and his calm, comforting demeanor touched me. There is HOPE in this world when we show a little kindness to each other.
