A labor of love: High schoolers lend a hand to assisted living
Celebrating Valentines Day just got a whole lot sweeter with Wareham DECA, the culinary club and All-American Assisted Living.
Students from Wareham High School teamed up with All American Assisted Living Wednesday, Feb. 11 to create chocolate covered strawberries for the residents to enjoy at the assisted living's Vintage Prom. Tables were full of jokes and chatter as bonds were created.
All-American Assisted Living’s Lifestyle Director, Elizabeth Lindquist, said that the even residents who don't often show up for events came and spent time with the students. Lindquist highlighted how much an event like the strawberry decorating meant for the residents and how well it built connections.
“This type of activity is exactly what these residents need. It was so heartwarming to see all the smiles," she said.
The students joined in as part of a community service project titled “Cooking with the Residents.” According to Wareham DECA, one bond grew so strong that one of the students, Sawyer Boutin, planned on twinning with a resident at the Vintage Prom the next day.
DECA is an international non-profit organization dedicated to teaching kids about business, marketing, finance and more as well as giving them the skills they need to prepare as future entrepreneurs.
