Cynthia A. (Cook) McCarthy, 89

Cynthia A. (Cook) McCarthy, age 89, of Onset, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Tobey Hospital in Wareham. She was the daughter of the late Horace F. and Marion W. (Maskell) Cook of Foxborough.
 
Cynthia graduated from Foxborough High School in 1952, and from Tufts University in 1956, earning her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. She was a pioneer and role model for women in engineering, holding many positions throughout her career, including working for the Mass Port Authority, as the City Engineer for Newton, and as a Lead Engineer for Bechtel on the Central Artery Project.
 
As an alumnus of Tufts University, Cynthia was an active member of the Tufts Alumni Association, including serving as the President in the 1980s. The Tufts College of Engineering presented her with the Distinguished Service Award in 1999.
 
She was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to many. She was the sister of John F. Cook of Nashua, NH, and the late Peter A. Cook of NJ. She leaves her three children, September McCarthy of Westport, MA, William L. McCarthy (and wife, Wendy) of Santa Ana, CA, and Jennifer L. Schaap-McCarthy (and husband, Frank) of Born, the Netherlands. She also leaves five grandchildren, Nicholas J. Moscaritolo (and wife, Kristen) of Lakeville, MA, Emily M. McCarthy of WA, and Brian (and wife, Ann), Mark and Walter Schaap of the Netherlands, and one great-grandchild, Joey Gervais. Her many nieces and nephews include Sarah (Cook) Steinberg (and husband, Kurt), Jamie (Cook) Patterson (and husband, Jim), Peter Cook (and wife, Sue), Michael Cook (and wife, Marie), and Christopher Cook (and wife, Claire).
