South Coast Chamber Music Series Presents All Souls October 31 and November 1
Just in time for Halloween, three powerful works explore mystery, memory, and the human spirit!
The South Coast Chamber Music Series (SCCMS), a program of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, presents All Souls, a captivating afternoon of chamber music on Saturday, October 31, at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Marion and Sunday, November 1, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in South Dartmouth. Both performances begin at 3 PM.
Timed perfectly for Halloween and All Souls’ Day, this evocative program takes audiences on a musical journey through mystery, remembrance, and the powerful emotions that connect us across generations. Featuring works by Charles Ives, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Edward Elgar, All Souls offers moments of playful surprise, haunting beauty, and profound reflection.
The afternoon opens with Charles Ives’s playfully frightful Hallowe’en, a short, spirited work that sets the stage for the unexpected. Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 3, composed in the aftermath of World War II, begins with a deceptively lighthearted spirit before venturing into darker territory. A ghostly waltz gives way to the sounds of musical battle, followed by a moving elegy for those lost to war. A haunting cello solo brings the work to its unforgettable conclusion.
The program closes with Sir Edward Elgar’s Piano Quintet in A Minor, completed near the end of World War I. Rich with mystery, tenderness, and sweeping emotion, this extraordinary work reflects on loss and remembrance while offering moments of warmth and consolation. At once macabre, sentimental, and deeply moving, it provides a fitting conclusion to an afternoon devoted to the enduring power of music.
Performing are violinists EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks and Bryce Martin, violist Christopher Nunn, cellist Leo Eguchi, and SCCMS Artistic Director and pianist Janice Weber. Together, these accomplished musicians bring audiences the intimacy and immediacy that make chamber music such a special experience, where every instrument has a voice and every musical conversation can be heard up close.

About the South Coast Chamber Music Series
The South Coast Chamber Music Series was formed to bring outstanding chamber music to communities throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. Since its first subscription series concert in 2001, SCCMS has presented music ranging from Bach, Brahms, and Ravel to compelling works by contemporary composers.
Each program brings together exceptional musicians, diverse repertoire, and the intimate acoustic environments of Marion and South Dartmouth, creating a uniquely personal connection between performers and audiences. SCCMS joined forces with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra in 2014, expanding opportunities for more concerts, more musicians, and more music throughout the South Coast.
