Wareham wins against Old Rochester in annual Powderpuff game

MATTAPOISETT —  Thanksgiving football isn’t just for the boys. On Tuesday, Nov. 21, Wareham High School girls took to the gridiron to face off against players from Old Rochester Regional High School in the annual Powderpuff Football game.

This annual game swaps the sport’s gender roles and puts girls on the field while boys cheer from the sidelines. At past Powderpuff games boys donned tutus over their sweatpants and cheered from the sidelines.

According to Wareham player Makayla Young the team had about two weeks of practice before the game.

And that practice led Wareham to a 14-0 victory over Old Rochester during Tuesday’s game. Wareham also won last year’s Powderpuff game 6-0 against Old Rochester.

“I feel like we did really well and we had lots of fun,” said Young. “I’m really proud of us. We kept our defense strong and that really helped me when I was on offense.”

Young scored one of two touchdowns for Wareham during the game.

“We didn’t know what we were going to get into,” said Wareham player Alexis Pettersen. “Before the game we were taught that defense wins games and it definitely did.”
