Updated: One apparent death in West Wareham shooting

Robert Gomes, 26, of Wareham is facing murder and gun charges following the fatal shooting of his father which occurred at a residence on Main Street between Pierceville Road and County Road on the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 27, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.

In the attached photo, what appears to be the body of the male victim on the deck of the house has been cropped from the top.

While the motive is currently unclear, a post made by Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz on X, formerly Twitter, stated, “This is not believed to be a random act of violence.”

Gomes is set to be arraigned in Wareham District Court Tuesday, Nov. 28, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Main Street neighbor Jewell Novak said she had walked by the home on the day of the shooting with her grandson and it had been quiet.

Novak said it was “disturbing” to find out about the act of violence that would occur later that day.

She added all of the neighbors are “shaken up” by the news as they all live in what they believed to be a relatively quiet neighborhood.

Her daughter, Ashleigh Novak, said, “You don’t think it’ll happen to you or next to you.”

Jewell said, “It’s very sad,” adding how everyone is effected when incidents like this happen. 

State Police could not be immediately reached for comment. 

Lieutenant Michael Smith of the Wareham Police said his department could not comment on the incident as it is now under the jurisdiction of the District Attorney’s Office.
