At the tail end of a season that has so far seen the Wareham Vikings High School Football Team earn a 6-3 record, Head Coach Brandon Perry has resigned from his position.

Perry cited off-the-field difficulties as the reason for his resignation. 

"It was not something I wanted to do, or wanted to have happen like this," he said. 

Perry said, as early as the second week of the season, the coaching situation became a "toxic work environment" for him and his coaching staff. He said certain underclassmen players and their parents pressured him and his staff, wanting more playing time for the younger kids. 

The team lost a majority of its players to graduation after a 2-9 season last year. The team went on a recruiting drive to build up its program at the start of this year's season. 

Ed Rodrigues, Wareham High School athletic director, said he had no comment on Perry's resignation as he could not comment on the school's employees. 

Track and field hockey coach Chris Gardner took over as interim coach for the football team prior to its most recent game, Rodrigues said. 

Perry said he plans to continue coaching, and will likely pursue coaching at the college level in addition to his private coaching work. 

Despite the end of his time with the team, Perry said he was glad to see its success over the course of the season, especially on behalf of the graduating seniors. 

"On the field, that's where it was really the best," Perry said.
