No new trial for 2014 stabbing

Oct 3, 2023

The conviction of Wareham’s Demetrius Goshen, who was found guilty of fatally stabbing 23-year-old Dwayne Borges in 2014, has been upheld by the Massachusetts Appeals Court.

On Oct. 8, 2014, police responded to a report of a stabbing at the Cumberland Farms at 169 Main Street. Borges died of stab wounds following a medical evacuation flight to Boston Medical Center. Goshen, who was 18 at the time of the incident, was charged and convicted on one count of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to serve 18 to 20 years in state prison.

Goshen appealed his conviction, primarily on the grounds of ineffective assistance of council. On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the Massachusetts Appeals Court denied Goshen’s request for a new trial, but accepted his request for a new sentencing hearing.
