The Wareham girls varsity basketball team came out swinging in a scrimmage against Upper Cape Cod Vocational High School on Wednesday, Dec. 8. 

The Vikings went six close rounds of practice against Upper Cape Cod Vocational High School. At the start of one mid-game quarter, the Wareham squad opened up with nine unanswered points through an explosive series of plays. 

The team "looked good tonight," said Wareham head coach Mike Fortune.

"We've got probably five days of real practice underneath us, and we're struggling a little bit on some responsibilities out there… but we'll get there for sure," he said. 

Even so, he tempered expectations for the season to come. 

"After a three-win season last year, honestly, I'm hoping that we can just come out, play hard, get better [and] allow the girls to hopefully enjoy their season," said Fortune. 

The girls basketball program at Wareham High School has been in flux in recent years with four head coaches in as many years. In addition, the school didn't have a junior varsity team last year, meaning anyone who wanted to play was on the varsity team, said Fortune. 

He added, "We're starting to get it under control. We have a varsity team and a [junior varsity] team now, so we're starting to go in the right direction for sure."

The team started its season off with a game on Friday, Dec. 8 against Rising Tide Charter Public School. Its next home game is against Boston Latin Academy on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m.
