New engine pumper, land conservation on for Fire District Special Meeting

Nov 20, 2023

Residents of the Wareham Fire District will have the opportunity to approve several big-ticket spending items at a Wednesday, Nov. 29 Special District Meeting.

The meeting will take place at the Wareham Fire Department, Station 2, 2368 Cranberry Highway, West Wareham.

On the docket is approval of $735,000 for the purchase of a new engine pumper.

The new pumper will replace the current Engine 3, which has been placed permanently out of service due to a cracked and rotting frame rail. The new engine will have a galvanized frame and an aluminum body, helping ward off rust and the elements.

Residents can also vote on $1,200,000 in spending to purchase approximately 152 acres of land near the Maple Springs Wildlife Management Area on Maple Springs Road in the north of the town.

The purchase will protect the aquifer supplying the district's Maple Springs wells, and allow the district to expand its well field in the future. Up to 40% of the purchase may be reimbursed by a Massachusetts state grant — if the district successfully gets the grant.

The warrant also includes approval of $112.50 to pay a bill from the prior year and approval of a $250,000 transfer of monies to the district's stabilization fund.
