Meet Sarah Corbitt

May 1, 2024

Sarah Corbitt first found Wareham when she applied for a position as a reporter with the now-defunct Wareham Courier. She was living in Mattapoisett at the time, and drove into Onset to discover the area.

“I saw Onset Harbor and I said, ‘Holy moly, that is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in my life,’” she said.

In the years after, Corbitt has gotten involved and invested in the community. She’s on the board of trustees for the Wareham Free Library and is a part of the Friends of the Wareham Free Library, she’s a member of the Wareham Land Trust and is a friend of the Council on Aging.

Since coming to Massachusetts, Corbitt has gained the belief that Town Meeting is “the best form of government,” with the Select Board as the executive branch to Town Meeting’s legislative branch.

Corbitt said she is concerned about the effect of ground-mounted solar development on Wareham. Particularly, with the deforestation that comes along with these developments, as well as with other environmental impacts such as the heat coming off the panels.

Corbitt said she also believes in approaching affordable housing carefully and encouraging the right kind of development.

“I think you can go about it the right way and still protect your town, and you can do it the wrong way and really inundate your town with all kinds of stuff,” said Corbitt.

She said the town should work with good companies and people trying to address the issue of affordable housing.

She has always loved volunteering, she said. “I’m able to devote my time to things that bring me joy, which is public service, having breakfast with friends and getting out and hiking around in the woods.”
